Abstract

We detected Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts in the aqueous humor of a 70-year-old farmer who had developed descemetocele and hypopyon in his right eye. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was also cultured from the aqueous humor. The present case suggests that concurrent bacterial infection plays an important role when Acanthoamoeba species induces keratitis in the human eye. An early diagnosis is crucial, as coinfection is refractory to treatment.
