A case of radiation colitis improved with ecabet sodium enema

Abstract

A 73-year-old man received radiation therapy (external radiation with 70 Gy) for carcinoma of the prostate. Bleeding at the rectum occurred approximately eight months after irradiation. Severe bleeding and anemia could not be controlled by hyperbaric oxygen therapy, argon plasma coagulation and sucralfate enemas. Therefore, we treated this patient with ecabet sodium enema, which is reported to be effective on ulcerative colitis. Bleeding and anemia gradually improved with this treatment. It is suggested that ecabet sodium enema can be an available treatment for radiation colitis.
