Abstract

We studied a case of sympathetic ophthalmia following vitrectomy for retinal detachment and secondary cataract due to atopic dermatitis. Steroid therapy resolved the inflammation, leading to a sunset fundus after 4 months. HLA-A-2, HLA-A-24, HLA-B-54, HLA-CW-1, HLA-CW-3 and HLA-DR-4 were positive. The incidence of sympathetic ophthalmia following vitrectomy at Okayama University Hospital from 1983 to 1996 comprised this 1 case, out of 1,229 cases. Examinations of HLA help predict the occurrence of sympathetic ophthalmia following vitrectomy.
