A novel concept and approach to fabricate protective KB/PVDF composite films on metallic bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells

Abstract

Composite coatings consisting of highly conductive fine carbon particles (Ketjen Black, KB) and corrosion resistant polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) were successfully fabricated on stainless steel substrates by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The morphologies and microstructures of the coatings were characterized by SEM and TEM. The characteristics of electrical resistance and corrosion resistance of the coatings were also evaluated. The study indicated that the synthesis of composite particles and their homogeneous distribution in the suspension was a prerequisite to obtain uniform green coatings; while post heat treatment could further improve the quality of the coatings. The stainless steel substrates coated with KB/PVdF composites exhibited both high electrical conductivity and good corrosion resistance, suggesting the possibility that they serve as the bipolar plates in PEM fuel cells. In addition, it is expected that the simple but effective method employed in this work could be extended to other coating systems.
