Abstract

A simplified procedure is proposed in this paper to estimate the suction strength of unsaturated soil. The procedure is based on an empirical hyperbolic function that has been successfully used to fit experimental data. A procedure to determine Miao's hyperbolic model parameters without regressive analysis is explained. The variation of unsaturated shear strength of Miao's model with respect to matric suction is also explained by using the air-entry value, suction strength at air-entry value and the effective internal friction angle of an unsaturated soil.
