Adrenomedullin 2 and 5

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

AM2 and AM5 are novel members of the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) family and consist of a single intramolecular ring structure and an amidated C-terminus, which are common to this family of peptides. AM2 and AM5 are both conserved in vertebrates, from fish to mammals, although AM5 is mutated or deleted in some species, including humans, mice, and rats. AM2 is expressed ubiquitously in the body, and exerts various effects similar to those of AM. Hypotension is currently likely to be the main function of AM2. Mammalian AM5 is expressed in the spleen and thymus and causes hypotension by peripheral administration, but its major biological function is not fully clarified yet. The specific receptors for AM2 and AM5 are still unknown.
