As a basis for determining a method for estimating the scoring temperature in a spur gear pair, the anti-scoring capacity of a gear base oil was examined by both spur gear and two-cylinder tests. In the mixed lubrication state, it is appropriate to estimate the scoring temperature of a spur gear pair from the outer surface bulk temperatures immediately before scoring in the two-cylinder tests, with the bulk temperature being taken as an index.
