Abstract
Spur gear tests and two-cylinder tests were carried out with a sulfur-type EP oil and a phosphorus-type EP oil, and their antiscoring capacities were examined from the standpoint of load and temperature with the results for the base oil being taken into account. An increase in specific sliding accelerates scoring from the mixed lubrication state and decreases the antiscoring capacities of the lubricating oils. A lubricating oil of low chemical reactivity has a small antiscoring capacity and tends to cause scoring in the accelerating stage of the gear pair. The antiscoring capacity of a spur gear pair is increased by relieving the tip interference on the approach side of the gear meshing. Finally, a method is proposed for estimating the scoring bulk temperature of the working flanks of a spur gear pair in the mixed lubrication state from the two-cylinder test results.
