Abstract

WWW has become one of the most important Internet applications, and a lot of guidelines such as the information accessibility standard for Web contents (JIS X 8341-3) have been proposed. There are few studies on the effects of arrangement of link buttons on Web usability. Moreover, it has not been explored how the Web advertisement display affects the Web search performance. The aim of this study was to identify Web design elements from the viewpoints of arrangement method of link buttons and Web advertisement page. In the first experiment, we investigated the effect of arrangement of link buttons on Web search performance. The longer physical movement distance for the horizontal list format must be compensated for by the faster movement velocity of mouse, which led to the no difference of search time between two arrangements of list buttons. Second, the effects of Web advertisement on Web search performance were examined. Both the interaction between the background color and the location of advertisement and the interaction between scroll function and location of advertisement were detected as important design factors.
