Abstract

The role of waves at margins of a sandy beach or a tidal flat to sea water for determination of species survival in a coastal ecosystem was found by an environmental study group from Hiroshim University. This means that different kinds of life appear under different habitat conditions such as with waves and without waves, i.e., the wave at the margin constitutes an important factor for determination of species composing coastal ecosystems. Here, we interpret this experimental result by constructing a mathematical model for aeration with close relation to breaking waves and ecosystem dynamics. In this modeling, a phase field model to treat alloys and an optimization method based on genetic algorithms play important roles. The sensor peculiar to benthos combines both of them.
