Abstract
This paper describes the theory, the distinctive features and the control method of the variable inductor with improved waveforms by means of an asymmetrical firing control of thyristors. The generation of harmonics can be effectively suppressed by means of the control method introduced in this variable inductor, then the harmonics are reduced less than one-third of the conventional type. This strong point is experimentally confirmed by using a microcomputer-based control system. The experimental results are represented in two cases of the settings of firing angles to suppress both of the 5th and 7th harmonics and to suppress the 3rd harmonic. The response of the Var compensator with the variable inductor to the step change of the reactive power is examined and discussed.
