N2 - The glass formation region, crystalline phases, second harmonic (SH) generation, and Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser-induced crystallization in the Sm 2O 3-B 2O 3 system were clarified. The crystalline phases of Bi 4B 2O 9, Bi 3B 5O 12, BiBO 3, Sm xBi 1-xBO 3, and SmB 3O 6 were formed through the usual crystallization in an electric furnace. The crystallized glasses consisting of BiBO 3 and Sm xBi 1 xBO 3 showed SH generations. The formation of the nonlinear optical BiB 3O 6 phase was not confirmed. The formation (writing) region of crystal lines consisting of Sm xBi 1-xBO 3 by YAG laser irradiation was determined, in which Sm 2O 3 contents were ∼ 10 mol%. The present study demonstrates that Sm 2O 3-Bi 2O 3-B 2O 3 glasses are promising materials for optical functional applications.
