Abstract

In recent years, serious accidents have been continually occurring in large industrial facilities in Japan. We have a responsibility to convey what we have learned from experiences to the younger generation to provide them with safe working environments and protect people's lives. Our society needs to be assured about the safety and reliability of chemical plants to prevent accidents. Safety education is especially important because safe practices are based on a strong foundation of safety experience and safety culture. This paper presents our research activities concerning the Advanced System Safety Laboratory. We have developed a manual operations support system using augmented reality (AR) technology and an operator training system using virtual reality (VR) technology. Both systems will improve safety awareness.
