Abstract

The internal oxidation of Fe-Ti alloys was investigated over the temperature range l023 to ll23 K. A parabolic rate law holds in the present alloys. The rate constant for penetration of the oxidation front, the oxide formed in the oxidation layer, and the titanium concentration in the layer were determined. The concentration of dissolved oxygen at the specimen surface, controlled by a reaction in equilibrium with iron and FeO, was evaluated using thermodynamic data on both the dissociation of FeO and the solution of oxygen in alpha -iron. The diffusion coefficient of oxygen in alpha -iron was determined on the basis of the rate equation for internal oxidation.
