T1 - Dilute carbon monoxide gas heating of molybdenum alloys

N2 - Dilute Mo-Zr Alloys heated in mixed gases of argon and carbon monoxide, microstructural observations through a transmission and scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction analysis and hardness measurements were carried out. Static three-point bend tests were also performed at 77 K. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that brittle a-Mo2C layer was hardly formed on the specimen surface at temperatures above 1573 K. Precipitation hardening due to dispersion of columnar Zr02 with a cubic structure was recognized in case of the specimens heated at temperatures above 1673 K. After dilute carbon monoxide gas heating, grain boundary was strengthened due to the grain boundary segregation of carbon, resulting in an increase in fracture strength. These results indicate that dilute carbon monoxide gas heating is effective in the strengthening of molybdenum alloys.
