Abstract

Reductive addition of carbon tetrachloride to benzaldehydes and subsequent reductive 1,2-elimination of chlorine atom and hydroxy group have been performed in a catalytic amount of PbX//2 (X equals Cl, Br)-Al (1. 2-1. 5 equiv. ) system. The present homologation reaction can be successfully used for phenylacetic acids synthesis.
