Abstract

The effect of glycyrrhizin on the amine dynamics in noradrenergic, dopaminergic or serotonergic nervous system in the rat brain was investigated. Following repeated subcutaneous administration of glycyrrhizin 50mg/kg for 7 days, significant decreases in the 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy- phenylglycol(MHPG)/norepinephrine(NE) ratio in the hippocampus and hypothalamus were produced. Glycyrrhizin 50 mg/kg s.c. also caused a significant decrease in 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC)/dopamine (DA) ratio in the hippocampus. But, Glycyrrhizin did not induced significant changes in 5-hydroxyindole-3 acetic acid (5-HIAA)/serotonin (5-HT) ratio in 4 regions of the brain. These findings suggest that hight doses of glycyrrhizin decreases NE or DA turnover in hippocampus and hypothalamus as a result of the interference with the NE or DA content in the neuron, but therapeutic doses of glycyrrhizin dose not cause a significant change on monoamine turnover in the brain.
