    Abstract

The E-pO2- diagram is very instructive for the selection of corrosion-resistant materials. In the molten hydroxide system, the equilibrium constant K1 of the reaction 2 OH-=H2O+O2- is one of the basic data for the E-pO2- diagram. In order to obtain the constant K1, we determined the chemical potential of Na2O(μo(Na2O)) dissolved in molten sodium hydroxide at 623 K (350°C) to be -4.71×105 J mol-1, by the use of the following cell:. Na/beta-alumina/NaOH(Na2O)/ZrO2-Y2O3/O2(Pt). K1 calculated from the above experimental data is then 1.0×10-10 atm.
