Abstract
A new estimation method of the optimum relaxation factor for the successive overrelaxation method is proposed, and its efficiency is surveyed through a number of numerical experiments. The characteristics of the new method are that (1) it can a priori determine the value of the factor by using only the topological properties in the linear systems, and (2) it is valid not only for the linear system obtained by the finite difference method but also for the one led from the finite element method.
