Abstract
The coefficient of friction and the resistance to seizure development were studied using five kinds of lubricants (lubricating oil N, H, I, K, and a solid lubricant M), and the minimum coefficient of friction and conditions under which the development of seizure does not occur were examined by establishing the relationships between lubricant, die material, and the surface treatment. The effects exerted by punch material and the surface finish on the punch press-in force were weak, but lubricant and the surface treatment exerted a strong influence. The application of lubricant M and the surface treatment with diamond-like coating (DLC) reduced the penetration force by ≥ 10-20%. The surface treatment with DLC showed a lower coefficient of friction in the presence of any lubricant. However, a combination of both factors did not reduce the coefficient of friction. Solid lubricant M showed a decrease of the seizure index number by ∼ one-third as compared to other lubricants and offered a high resistance to seizure development. The surface treatment exerted a strong effect on the prevention of seizure development and surface treatment with DLC showed a complete elimination of the seizure development and a high resistance to seizure development.
