FLASH TEMPERATURE IN SPUR GEARS.

Abstract

Using as a model an isotropic and homogeneous rectangular shaped body, the flash temperature on the working flank of a spur gear tooth was studied. The effects of various factors on the flash temperature were investigated by comparing the conventional flash temperature on the surface of a semi-infinite body. The results indicate that the maximum flash temperature in the heat supply region has an intimate relation with the product of the size of the heat supply region and the moving velocity of the heat source. In d OVER BAR vertical upsilon OVER BAR vertical not less than 10, the maximum flash temperature is determined both by the state of the variation in supplied heat quantity and by the values of d OVER BAR vertical upsilon OVER BAR vertical and t OVER BAR / DELTA t OVER BAR regardless of the state of radiation, the moving direction of the heat source, and the dimensions of the body. A simple equation is proposed which is useful for calculating the maximum flash temperature when the supplied heat quantity varies with time and d OVER BAR vertical upsilon OVER BAR vertical is not less than 10.
