Abstract
Corrugation formation occurs not only on railroad tracks but also in various rolling friction systems such as roller bearings, gear transmissions, printing presses, grinding machines, wear test stands, etc. It causes or intensifies undesired vibrations and noise, which impair the functional capacity of the machines or installations and adversely affect the environment. The avoidance or reduction of corrugation contributes to longer lifetime of the components and to a lessening of noise pollution. In this paper the results of fundamental studies of corrugation formation are presented in such a way that those concerned with this phenomenon are provided with a comprehensive survey of the present state of research in this area and are stimulated to take appropriate measures to prevent corrugation.
