Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been isolated from bone marrow and various organs and tissues. Nowadays, a large number of tissue regeneration studies using MSCs have been reported because of their multiple differentiation ability. Furthermore, systemic MSC transplantation has been gradually considered as a promising approach for intractable diseases such as autoimmune disease, because of their immunomodulation properties. These remarkable functions are not limited to MSCs from bone marrow or adipose tissue, but also from dental tissues including dental pulp, periodontal ligament, and gingiva. This review first overviews the accumulated evidence about the immunomodulation properties of MSCs, with a focus on dental tissue derived-MSC and their potential application for immunotherapy in dentistry.
