In vitro antibacterial activities and murine studies of novel quercetin diacylglycosyde analogues

Quercetin is a unique bioflavonoid that has been extensively studied by researchers over past 30 years. Reports of activity in the field of antibacterial flavanoid research are widely conflicting, probably owing to inter-and intra-assay variation in susceptibility testing. However, several high quality investigations have examined the relationship between flavanoid structure and antibacterial activity and these are in close agreement. In addition, numerous research groups have sought to elucidate the antibacterial mechanisms of action of selected flavanoid. The activity of quercetin, for example, has been at least partially attributed to inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase. In addition, quercetin is one of suitable ligand among flavanoid to fit inside the ATP binding site of DNA gyrase B and Topoisomerase IV ParE. Nevertheless, quercetin can't inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacterial strains even at high concentrations though it can inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacterial strains at high concentration.
