Lattice dynamics of CuGeO3 by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering study has revealed that along the a*-axis the energies of the longitudinal acoustic and the transverse acoustic phonon with polarized along the b*-axis are nearly equal. The similar relationship has also been found for the phonon branches propagating along the b*-axis. This strange feature may originate from the special structure of CuGeO3 that has CuO2 and GeO chains aligned along the c-axis and interacting very weakly with each other.
