LF pied-piping of in-situ wh-phrases

The present paper is concerned with wh-in-situ in English and Japanese. Although it has been standard since Huang (1982) that wh-phrases in-situ undergo LF movement, a number of linguists argue that they do not move, but are 'unselectively bound'. The new set of data in this paper is better accounted for by the LF movement approach to wh-in-situ than by the unselective binding approach. In particular, it is demonstrated that a wh-phrase in-situ that has another wh-phrase in-situ permits only inversely linked interpretation. Furthermore, it is shown that an argument similar to the one in English can be constructed based on the interaction of Japanese wh-phrases and negative polarity items.
