Abstract
A cluster model approach is applied to the analysis of the Ni 2p core-level X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in Ni dihalides, where the intraatomic multiplet coupling is fully taken into account. The difference in the line shape between the 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 spectra is shown to originate from the multiplet splitting of their charge transfer satellites.
