Abstract
The failure of embankments, such as levees and embankment dams, due to overflow is a topic concerning the surface erosion, while the piping phenomenon is governed by the internal erosion. This paper presents several examples of numerical analyses on such phenomena, introducing the concept of erosion rate which is defined as the volume of soil particles eroded form unit surface area within unit time. The rate can be experimentally determined as a function of the force exerted by the fluid. The results of the numerical analyses have shown that the profiles of the embankment subject to overflow and the time required for the failure are predictable and that the development of piping within soil structures can be simulated.
