Abstract

A new helium-filled proportional counter was constructed for conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy under strong magnetic fields. The counter was specially designed to be inserted into superconducting electromagnets placed at the bottom of a liquid helium cryostat. The operation of the counter was stable enough in magnetic fields up to 3 T at 4.2 K and it seemed to be little influenced by the strong magnetic field. A high performance of the present counter was demonstrated by observing a field-induced magnetic spin rotation of an α-Fe film.
