Abstract

Porous carbon materials for the carbon electrodes of an electronic double-layer capacitor (EDLC) were prepared by carbonization of commercial ion-exchanged resins. Carbonized materials from a chelate resin (C467) with Cu2+ ion showed much higher specific capacitance (more than 100-150 F/g) than commercial carbon electrodes. The capacitance remained at a high level even after more than 60 charge and discharge cycles were repeated. An aqueous H2SO4 solution appeared to be a suitable electrolyte for EDLC electrodes prepared from the ion-exchanged resin.
