Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the bladder effectively treated with intra-arterial chemotherapy and radiation therapy: A case report

We report a case of primary signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) simultaneously accompanied by transitional cell carcinoma arising in the urinary bladder. We treated it by intra-arterial chemotherapy through the bilateral internal-iliac artery and radiation therapy was given as a neoadjuvant treatment. We then performed radical cystourectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy and made an Indiana pouch. Clinical assessment of the efficacy of intra-arterial chemotherapy revealed the complete disappearance of the tumor, which was certified histopathologically from the cystectomy specimen. Twenty two months later, we can find no evidence of the disease. Primary SRCC of the urinary bladder is very rare and has a poor prognosis. We review the chemotherapy for SRCC of the urinary bladder as reported in the literature.
