Abstract

Reduction of α-chloroalkyl phenyl (or methyl) sulfides with chromium(II) chloride in THF proceeds smoothly in the presence of Lil. The resulting (α-thioalkyl) chromium reagents add to aldehydes in a chemo- and stereoselective manner.
