Thomas J. Wydrzynski (Figs. 2 and 4) a native of Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, now serves as a Professor of Pho-tobioenergetics in the Research School of Biological Sciences (RSBS) at The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia. He completed his PhD (Plant Physiology) in 1977 at the University of Illinois at Urbana– Champaign (UIUC) under the guidance of Govindjee (Fig. 4). For his PhD thesis research, he was the first to apply solvent water proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements as a dynamic probe of the functional manganese in PS II in situ. Also, while he was a PhD student, he provided the first clear experimental evidence, in 1975, for a site of bicarbonate action on the electron acceptor site in PS II. He was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Energy-Related Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 1976 and worked with Kenneth Sauer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1977 to 1979, where he obtained some of the first experimental evidence to indicate that the functional manganese changes the oxidation state during O2 production. He then joined industry and
