Abstract

We experienced two cases of neurogenic tumor arising from the retroperitoneal space during the clinical course of malignant disease (Case 1: testicular cancer, Case 2: kidney cancer) These retroperitoneal tumors mimicked lymph node metastasis from each of the malignant diseases and a definitive preoperative diagnosis was not made. Tumors were removed under the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis. Postoperative histological analysis revealed neurogenic tumor (Case 1: ganglioneuroma, Case 2: paraganglioma). The postoperative clinical course was uneventful without any additional treatments. Retroperitoneal neurogenic tumor found during the clinical course of active malignant disease can not be differentiated from its metastatic lesion. Preoperative needle biopsy is still controversial. Further development of functional imaging analysis may solve this clinical problem.
