Abstract
A reliability-based design for the improvement of earth-fill dams is discussed in this study, and the effect of improving of the embankment is evaluated in relation to the safety of the embankment against earthquakes. An inclined core is considered here as the means of improvement for the earth-fill embankment. To evaluate the stability of earth-fill dams, the elasto-viscoplastic finite element method (EVP-FEM) is used. Then, combining the Monte Carlo method with the EVP-FEM, the expected damage costs are calculated. Finally, the effect of this improvement is evaluated by comparing the total costs before and after the restoration of the embankment.
