Abstract
The characteristics of settlement of a concrete block placed on a liquefied sand bed were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Model experiments investigated the settlement with variations in the properties of the structure, the water pressure and sand bed porosity. Settlement of the block and changes in pore water pressure with time were measured. Experimental results show the main factors influencing the settlement characteristics are the sand bed porosity and the attached area of the block. Numerical analysis was used to investigate the dynamic behaviour of the sand bed and the distributions of pore pressure and effective stress. (from authors' abstract)
