Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of a radioactive nucleus 18N has been observed through a change in the β-ray asymmetry, by taking advantage of the fragment spin polarization in the projectile fragmentation reaction. To facilitate the experiment, a new scheme has been developed which allows assessment of the polarization prior to the resonance search in the β-ray detected NMR experiment. The obtained magnetic moment \μ\ =-0.3279 ± 0.0017μN and the electric quadrupole moment \Q\ = 12.1 ± 1.2 mb are compared with shell-model calculations.
