Abstract
Statistical studies on postoperative infections after urological surgery were performed on 3,926 cases of patients hospitalized between 1979 and 1991 in the Department of Urology, Okayama University Hospital. 1) Recently, the total number of postoperative febrile infections has been decreasing year by year. In particular, the number of infections following prostatic surgery has markedly decreased. 2) The amounts of prescribed 3rd generation cephems and new quinolones has gradually decreased during the past 3 years. 3) The isolation rate of Serratia marcescens from postoperative upper urinary infections has decreased due to the clinical use of the 3rd generation of cephems, however the incidence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa has not decreased. 4) It is considered that the increase in wound infection caused by MRSA is one of the new problems regarding the prophylaxis against postoperative infection.
