Abstract
Workers must be trained for skilled performance at a manufacturing process to make a product skillfully. The exact setup operations before machining especially influence the machining quality. Setup operations involve the setting of workpieces on a pallet with jigs and fixtures. Such operations depend heavily on skilled workers’ experience. Appropriate skill strategies are crucial for efficient setup operations. This paper describes the methodology of planning for skill acquisition and a skill strategy for enhancing unskilled workers’ capabilities of setup operations at a machining centre. Moreover, a skill strategy for the setup operation is developed using an actual situation.
