N2 - The first example of a stable stannanetellone was synthesized and isolated by taking advantage of kinetic stabilization afforded by the combination of steric protecting groups, 2,6-bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]-4- [tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl]phenyl (Bbt) and 2,2'',4,4''-tetraisopropyl-m- terphenyl-2'-yl groups. The structural parameters and spectroscopic data of the isolated stannanetellone were systematically compared with those previously reported for the lighter congeners, i. e., the stannanethione and stannaneselone. Attempted synthesis of a stannanetellone by the reaction of dilithiostannane with tellurium dichloride is also described.
