Abstract
The studies on the opening size between shear boxes in the direct shear test using the DEM simulation have been conducted for the ball element of mean particle size (D50) larger than 0.8 mm. This study focuses on verifying the Threshold-Line as a guide line for the opening size of the particle size smaller than 0.8 mm with the DEM simulation. This study consists of two major parts. The first part is to verify the scale effect of the shear box because the number of ball increases due to the decrease of the mean particle size. After it was confirmed that there is no scale effect of the shear box, the shear box size in this study was decreased for the efficient analysis. In second part, the TL as a reasonable guideline was examined by performing the DEM simulation with the variation of the shear box size and the mean particle size. From the results, the Threshold-Line could be a reasonable guideline for the opening size of shear boxes in the direct shear test.
