Abstract

The authors have developed a system which combines duplex Doppler echocardiography and digital multigate Doppler technique, providing structure and flow information simultaneously. This study evaluated the flow abnormalities in patients with aortic regurgitation and with mitral regurgitation by the turbulence index, the square root of the variance of the instantaneous power frequency spectrum of Doppler signals. The color coded display of turbulence indexes was superimposed on the two-dimensional echocardiogram to visualize the distribution of the intracardiac flow abnormalities. The regurgitant flow distribution on the two-dimensional cardiac image was coincident with that of angiography. The results suggest that the method offers quantitative evaluation of the distribution of regurgitation.
