Background: The significance of gingipains on the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is poorly understood. Results: The inactivation of PI3K and Akt was induced by P. gingivalis, which was associated with gingipains. Conclusion: Gingipains are critical for suppressing the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway via extracellular proteolysis independent of P. gingivalis invasion. Significance: This study shows the first evidence that the gingipains negatively regulate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
