N2 - Theoretical analysis of the Cu Kα resonant X-ray emission Spectroscopy (RXES) in the pre-edge region of La2CuO4 is made with a Cu5O16 cluster model. The Cu 1s to the on-site Cu 3d excitation by the electric quadrupole (EQ) transition and the Cu 1s to the off-site Cu 3d excitation by the electric dipole (ED) transition are treated in a unified manner, and the calculated RXES spectra are in good agreement with recent experimental results. The valence hole distribution over 5 Cu and 16 O sites are demonstrated for the ground state and the EQ and ED excited states. The present calculation confirms that the Cu Kα RXES is a sensitive probe in detecting fine structures invisible by the conventional XAS measurements.
