Stretching from the middle of the 3rd century to the end of the 7th century, the Kofun period witnessed the construction of numerous mounded tombs belonging to kings and local elite (hereafter referred to as kingly and chiefly mounded tombs, respectively). Mound size, however, differed by construction period and sociopolitical rank; similarly, location also varied by period. While mounded tombs were imbued with a multitude of meanings, it was no doubt the massive and imposing earthen mound that had the greatest impact on the contemporary people and it was the location of the mounded tombs that played a significant role….
